The Beauty and Class of Richmond’s Original Suburbs

The Fan and Museum Districts are two of the area’s most stately and historic residential neighborhoods, just west of Downtown Richmond. Once prime farmland, the two areas were gradually built out and served as the city’s original “West End.” The Fan was aptly named due to the nature of its streets that “fan out” westward from the edge of the VCU campus.

Development followed the tracks of the city’s original trolley system as it was expanded westward. The bulk of the neighborhood’s stock of housing was largely built out between the 1880s and 1920s and features architecture running the gamut from Italianate, Queen Anne, and Colonial Revival styles to Bungalow, American Foursquare, and Art Deco.

The neighborhoods’ original character remains largely intact and features eclectic pockets of original storefronts and restaurants, most of which are locally owned and home to some of the city’s best cuisine.
